Adelaide - The Girl From The Past
The Junior group at a theatre are rehearsing Princess Caraboo. A new girl, Adelaide, or Adèle for short, joins them and competently steps in to take the leading role. But who is she? None of the others know and she is never seen other than in the theatre……..
Talking at the Warehouse Theatre, Ilminster with Anna (Bowerman) last year, she mentioned a girl in a brown dress who is seen there from time to time. It set me thinking.
Later I was very pleased to be asked to write a play for the Warehouse Juniors to be performed in 2007, both the 60th anniversary of the Ilminster Entertainments Society and the 20th anniversary of the Warehouse Theatre.
The play clearly had to be about the girl in the brown dress. No-one knows who she is, but the theatre’s original use as a workhouse suggested a possible explanation. I named her Adelaide, gave her a family and background, then developed the story of how she came to be in the workhouse, remaining there to this day.
The story of Adelaide was to be woven in with that of a group of youngsters rehearsing a play. I asked the Warehouse Juniors for their ideas, which were wonderful and varied, giving me much interesting material with which to work.
So the story of Adelaide is mine, the story of Caroline, Rachel and her rescue comes from the players themselves to whom I am indebted for their imagination and enthusiasm.
